Congratulations! You have joined a lively community of students, scholars, staff and alumni who share in the College's twin traditions: academic strength and openness to diversity. The College takes an active interest in your academic success as well as your broader social and cultural life. We have arranged a series of events to get you off to a good start. Below you will find the steps to take now and through the summer. Following that you will find a general overview of what you can expect during the school year. WELCOME & INFORMATION SESSIONS:
New Students' GuideThe University College New Students' Guide 2012-2013 will be available in June 2012. Printed copies of this booklet were distributed at the June Welcome Sessions. It contains valuable information about course selection and enrolment, upcoming events and many resources available on campus to support your academic and personal experience as a student at the University of Toronto. ScholarshipsScholarship offers normally accompany your admission offer. Details of University college scholarships mentioned in your offer will be mailed separately after your receive your offer of admission. All applicants are considered automatically; no separate application is required. Decisions are based on the admission average at the time of admission; however, in late summer those accepting offers of admission will be reconsidered in a review based on final marks. The College offers many scholarships, however we also have many extraordinary students so, unfortunately, we cannot recognize all highly-qualified students at the time of admission. Students should remember that UC and the Faculty of Arts & Science also award many in-course scholarships in later years. ResidenceIf you requested a residence space on your application, our Residence office will be corresponding with you by email, to the email address indicated on your OUAC application. It is important that you check your email account regularly. If you do not receive anything within 5 days of your offer of admission, please contact the Residence office immediately at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or (416) 978-2530 to ensure that your Residence Guarantee remains active. Course Selection MaterialsYour course selection materials are the Arts & Science Calendar and Registration Handbook & Timetable. Students may also pick up paper copies at the Registrar's office (available as of April 2012). We do not normally mail these bulky materials except in special circumstances. If you require them to be mailed, please forward a money order payable to the University of Toronto to the Registrar's office ($10 CAD within Canada; $20 CAD to other international destinations). Course Selection AdviceIn July, the College offers group advising sessions to help first-year students choose courses. At these sessions, we go over the mechanics of course selection on the Student Web Service (ROSI), as well as the questions you will need to ask yourself about what you want to study. The schedule of course selection workshops will be posted in June. First year course registration starts on July 30th. Note: Transfer Students should call the office for an individual appointment as their situations are often complex. All other newly admitted students should come to an information session.
Fees and OSAPAfter you select your courses in July, you can check your financial account on the Student Web Service (ROSI) for your fees owing. All students will see the program fee for full-time studies (3.0 credits or more) on their invoice. If you plan to take less than 3.0 credits during the year as a part-time student, you should notify the Registrar's Office and we will change your fees so that you pay on a per course basis. Fees are paid either via online banking or at your bank using the invoice available on ROSI. You are required to pay at least the first installment of your fees (65%) to complete your registration, by August 21st. Students who will be receiving OSAP or other provincial loans may defer their fees payment on ROSI until their funding arrives. Detailed information on fees, payment and refund deadlines are available on the Student Accounts website. First year students should apply for OSAP online at osap.gov.on.ca by June 15th. Loan documents need to be picked up in the Registrar's Office in both September and January in order for students to receive their funding. Getting Started Early ProgramIn July and August, we offer academic skills instruction to explain how the expectations of university differ from those of high school, and to help you assess and improve your writing skills. Full details about the sessions and registration will be available at the Welcome Sessions. Academic SkillsThe Academic Success Centre is offering lectures and workshops in July and August. They provide ways to develop good study skills and exam preparation that will improve your chances for better grades. English Language LearningAn ELL Intensive Academic English Course will be offered from August 22nd to August 31st, 2011, for multilingual students who want to improve their critical listening, reading, writing and speaking skills in English. For details, go to www.newcollege.utoronto.ca/ell. Obtaining your TCard and @utoronto.ca Email AccountStarting Mon. June 4th, you can obtain your U of T identification card - your TCard - and set up your U of T email address. You do need to wait 5 days after accepting your offer of admission on the OUAC website before requesting a TCard. Every student is required to set up a utoronto.ca email account, even if you use it only to forward email, although this is not recommended because web-based email accounts may block messages from the university. More information about obtaining your TCard and utoronto.ca email address will be available at the Welcome Sessions and from the TCard Office and UTORmail websites. OrientationThe College invites all new students to Orientation, which runs the week before the start of classes and is organized by the College student council. Orientation comprises tours, activities and workshops to help you get to know UC and the U of T community. Off-campus students are also invited to attend My Definition, a weekend leadership conference in August - dates to be announced. A Summer 'TO DO' List
