More than 230 University College alumni, students, and friends gathered in Hart House's Great Hall last night for the fifth annual UC Alumni of Influence Awards.
Master of ceremonies Rona Maynard, a UC alumna, author, and speaker, described the 17 recipients as “change-makers of the first order. From the heavens to the human body, the boardroom to the courtroom, they’ve pushed boundaries and planted flags of inspiration.”
Arthur Potts, a UC alumnus and the Member of Provincial Parliament for Beaches-East York, brought greetings on behalf of the government of Ontario, while David Palmer, Vice-President of Advancement at the University of Toronto, addressed honourees directly: “Alumni like you not only sustain this University with your talent, imagination, dedication and generosity; you project that goodwill around the world.”
University College Principal Donald Ainslie urged alumni to get to know the student leaders seated at their tables; 34 students were able to attend thanks to alumni and friends who sponsored their tickets.
For Ramsey Andary, President of the UC Literary and Athletic Society, the event was inspirational. "As a student, it is easy to get caught up in our studies and focus solely on the daily stresses we experience while obtaining our degree. Meeting the UC Alumni of Influence award recipients enables us to see the bigger picture: we are getting an education at the same great institution and share the same collegiate values as our successful predecessors. We know we can make a similar impact in the world some day," he said.
The awards were created in order to recognize the tremendous contributions of UC alumni to most every field of human endeavour. So far, more than 160 alumni have been honoured.
Winners are selected on the basis of nominations from the UC community. Please help us identify candidates for future editions of the awards by making a nomination.
