James Grier (BA 1977 UC) Elected to Royal Society of Canada

James Grier

University College alumnus James Grier, Professor of Music History at the University of Western Ontario, has been elected to the Royal Society of Canada, the nation's highest academic honour.

He is an expert in textual criticism and editing music, music and liturgy in medieval Aquitaine, and popular music since World War II. The citation states "his research links a close reading of musical style with the broad historical context in which musicians create, disseminate and practise their repertories."

His research has received support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the American Council of Learned Societies, National Endowment for the Humanities, and a Killam Research Fellowship.
