Students enrol in the Health Studies program at the end of their first year. Students can choose from two subject programs of study (subject POSts).
• Specialist in Health Studies
• Major in Health Studies
The relatively small size of the Health Studies Program ensures that students will explore the determinants of health in small and highly interactive classes. Since highly motivated students are selected from many different backgrounds, the program offers a stimulating yet critical multidisciplinary approach to Health Studies. Furthermore, together with each student, we tailor the Specialist and Major streams within the program to accommodate the particular interests of students while maintaining a rigorous academic core curriculum.
A Strong Focus on Research
The University of Toronto is Canada's premier research institution, and Health Studies students have the chance to be mentored by U of T’s best health researchers through a variety of independent research courses. The program's strong emphasis on research means that our graduates are exceptionally well prepared for postgraduate research and study in a variety of fields, including public health.
A Career In Health
The multidisciplinary approach to Health Studies prepares students for a wide and varied range of academic and career opportunities. In particular, the Health Studies Practicum offers students the chance to do a health-related placement in a local organization, helping students to gain the confidence and skills needed for entering careers in health policy and administration. Health Studies graduates also pursue further professional education in a variety of fields, including medicine and other health professions, teaching, and planning. No matter their destination, our graduates take with them a deep and critical understanding of the determinants of health.
