Scholarships & Awards

Gift of friends and colleagues of Mary Jane Hendrie (UC 1981) who died in the Korean Airline incident of 1983. This award is intended for a student with financial need who has contributed to college life by participating in athletics or other extracurricular activities.

Established in 2007 in memory of Meyer Greenstein (UC 1940), the Meyer (Mike) Greenstein Memorial Student Award for Writing Excellence offers a single prize of up to $1,000 each year for excellence in any of the following categories: academic essay, other prose, poetry, drama, novel and short story.

Bequest of the late Miss Catherine S. Michell and Colonel William C. Michell, formerly principal of Riverdale Collegiate Institute. Awards are based on financial need. Academic merit may also be considered. Awards are variable in number and value depending on students’ financial need. Any balance of income may be used for in-course awards of variable value. Established in 1946 in memory of Norma Epstein (UC ’45), the Norma Epstein Foundation Awards in Creative Writing is a competition held annually and is open to students enrolled in University College or to students from other Colleges who are enrolled in University College-sponsored or affiliated courses or programs. Bequest of Professor T.J. Meek (UC 1903), distinguished scholar and head of the Department of Near Eastern Studies of which he was a member from 1923 until 1952; professor emeritus until his death in 1966. Variable as to number and value. Gift of Bob Rae (UC '69) and Arlene Perly Rae (UC '71) in honour of Mr. Rae's parents. To be awarded to University College students, financial need will be the primary criterion in selecting the recipients. To be awarded to students registered at University College on the basis of financial need. Eligible candidates are identified through the University's UTAPS program.

The Sally Croll Award for French Study Abroad is a travelling award established by the daughters and friends of Mrs. Sally Croll to honour her lifelong interest in French. The purpose of the award is to allow University College students studying French or knowledgeable in French to go abroad to immerse themselves in a French milieu while pursuing their academic interests. The criteria will be academic merit, financial need, and the merit of the proposal. The award is open to both undergraduates and graduates of University College. It may be used in conjunction with the exchange programs through the Centre for International Experience, as well as Summer Abroad Programs. 

A bequest of the late Shirley L. Muir (UC 1923), the value of this scholarship is the annual income from the fund. It is for a student with high standing and financial need. Apply using the online grant application available on ACORN.

Gift of Dr. Herbert J. Davis, professor of English in University College and later Prefessor of Textual Criticism at Oxford University, in honour of his wife Mrs. Gertrud Davis.  To promote the exchange of students between University College and German universities.  The scholarship will be awarded to University College students doing university studies in Germany.  Both students in upper years and recent graduates are eligible.
