The Founding College of the University of Toronto

Statement from Principal Markus Stock in Solidarity with University College’s Asian Community Members

Announcements

University College (UC) strongly condemns the violent, anti-Asian rampage that unfolded in Atlanta earlier this week. We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to those who lost loved ones, and also express unreserved support for the millions of others who are feeling frightened and unsafe. While this latest incident is perhaps the most violent recent example of anti-Asian racism we have witnessed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is symptomatic of a concerning and growing trend that has taken hold in Canada as well. As a college that was founded on principles of diversity and inclusion, we stand firmly against all forms of prejudice. We also stand in solidarity with all members of UC's Asian community and pledge to do everything in our power to keep UC's campus safe, welcoming, and free of hate-fueled ideologies that have no place in our world. Education and awareness are any society's strongest weapons in the fight against racism, and we vow to always promote truth over falsehoods, equality over discrimination, and love over hate.

If you or someone you know needs support at this time, please consult the resources available through the University of Toronto and reach out to us at UC as a first step. We are committed to supporting you as we renounce racism and structural injustice.
