UC Student Helps Researchers Identify Changes in Cantonese Language
University College student Jonathan Ng is part of a research team examining how the Cantonese language changes in immigrants from Hong Kong to Toronto. The fourth-year linguistics and sociology student and native Cantonese speaker is helping researchers identify denasalation, or “lazy” pronunciation of the “n” and “l” sounds in common words, as part of the linguistics department’s Heritage Language Variation and Change project.
