First-Year Learning Communities (FLC)
The First-Year Learning Communities (FLC) Program in the Faculty of Arts and Science is designed to improve the transitional experience for first-year students.
FLCs provide first-year students with the opportunity to meet classmates, develop friendships, form study groups, and develop academic and personal skills. FLCs also introduce students to the resources, opportunities, culture, and benefit of the campus and its surrounding community.
University College is proud to host two FLCs for Life Sciences and Rotman Commerce in our College. UC students are encouraged to apply for FLCs in any of the programs listed below.
A FLC is a group of 25-30 students in the same area of study, who will be enrolled in some of the same core first-year courses and will meet regularly outside of class time for useful and fun activities during their FLC sessions. The sessions are facilitated by an upper year Peer Mentor and an Assistant Peer Mentor with the support of staff and/or faculty advisors. The content of FLC sessions will address three broad transition areas: academic, developmental, and social. Some of the topics that may be covered in FLC meetings include: study strategies, campus traditions and history, mastering tests and exams, choosing a program of study, and career explorations. There will also be recreational, social activities, and much more!
The 2016-17 FLC program is open to newly-admitted, first-year Arts & Science students studying:
- Actuarial Science
- Computer Science
- Life Sciences
- Rotman Commerce
- Social Sciences
Register to join a FLC
FLC registration is from Mon. June 15 at 7:30 am EST to Mon. July 20 at 7:30 am EST on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is limited so apply early!
Registration is free, but space is limited so sign up early on the FLC website. You will be asked for your U of T email address. If you don’t have one yet, please provide a different email address.
