University College Café

A new café is coming to the third floor of the central tower of the UC building as part of the University College Revitalization. Thank you to everyone who provided submissions for the naming of the Café. The members of the Café Advisory Committee reviewed submissions and have narrowed them down to three choices. In the reviewing the submissions it was clear that a significant number were owl-themed.  The members of the Café Advisory Committee agreed that the symbol of the owl aligns with the location of the café between the library and the Clark Reading Room and references the numerous owl carvings and paintings found throughout the College.  As such, three owl-themed submissions have been proposed:

The Winking Owl has become an iconic symbol of the College.  It appears on the pins that new UC students receive during the Orientation matriculation ceremony and has become a symbol of the UC community. The carving of the Winking Owl can be found in the West Hall of University College.

Can be shortened to The Perch. The name draws upon the many owl-themed symbols and representations that can be found throughout the College. The Café is located on the third floor and is akin to a perch for birds.

An owlery is “an abode or haunt of owls” (Merriam-Webster, 2019). The name is intended to reinforce the intention of the café to become a gathering place for members of the UC community.  The location of the café in the “attic” of the College is a natural place for an owlery.
