Hargun Rekhi’s academic journey wasn’t always easy. Initially, she wanted to major in psychology, but life had other plans. Reiki, who graduated last June with a major in Environmental Science and minors in Psychology and Environment and Behaviour, became one of U of T's key environmental changemakers. Now, she's pursuing a master's degree in environmental studies at York University with a focus on Indigenous sovereignty and community consultation.

From the High Arctic tundra to the red carpet in Cannes, filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk has redefined Indigenous storytelling in cinema and changed how the world sees Inuit life. Two weeks ago, for his acclaimed achievements in the arts and entertainment as one of Canada’s most internationally celebrated filmmakers, Kunuk receive a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from the University of Toronto at UC's afternoon convocation ceremony.

UC graduate Elžbieta Chernyak has never shied away from a challenge. When she first started university, she had an interest in pursuing both biology and drama. Now, after four years of study and several productions later, her heart is set on a career as an actor — something she’s ready to take on after all that she's accomplished at U of T.

"U of T is a great school to be in, and I appreciate the opportunity to be here. I have really enjoyed being a UC student. My college has such a great team that is always ready to help, and I have felt at home." Originally from South Sudan, Athok Abuoi Chol fled her country in 2008 during a time of renewed violence and instability in the nation. Despite the challenges of starting a new chapter during a global pandemic — she completed a major in health and disease, with double minors in immunology and statistics.

Many dream of becoming astronauts, but few come close to making that dream a reality. During his four years at the University of Toronto, UC graduating student Hasaan Mohsin took a few large steps toward achieving his space ambitions: getting a scuba diving license, working towards a private pilot license, joining the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS) and diving into space research.
