UC alum Loren Freid is thriving in retirement after a nearly 40-year career as a leader in the not-for-profit health care, anti-poverty and community service sectors. “I sought a new road to heal, recharge and grow,” says Freid, who graduated in 1983 with his honours bachelor of arts degree as a member of University College.

From the High Arctic tundra to the red carpet in Cannes, filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk has redefined Indigenous storytelling in cinema and changed how the world sees Inuit life. Two weeks ago, for his acclaimed achievements in the arts and entertainment as one of Canada’s most internationally celebrated filmmakers, Kunuk receive a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, from the University of Toronto at UC's afternoon convocation ceremony.

After 22 years at JP Morgan, where he rose to managing director and chief technology officer of its global investment platform, alum David Lin is bringing decades of Wall Street experience to his new startup, Linvest21. The company offers AlphaCopilot, an autonomous investment platform powered by specialized AI agents, while Lin applies insights gained from his career experience and his formative time at the University of Toronto.

UC is delighted to announce that longstanding staff member and registrar Ryan Woolfrey has been named a 2025 Jill Matus Award for Excellence in Student Services recipient. The award is awarded to individual staff members who demonstrate excellence in the area of student services and whose contributions go above and beyond the responsibilities of their job.

University College student Yuehang (Peter) Ma won the Brian Mulroney Award, one of the 2025 Undergraduate Awards of Excellence in Economics. Faculty member Funké Aladejebi was recently awarded the 2024 Journalistic Excellence award in Print by the Canadian Ethnic Media Association. Professor Emerita Pia Kleber recently hosted several guests for a tea ceremony in the college. Alum Aiden Gomez’s (BSc 2018 UC) startup Cohere was listed as one of the top 10 startups to watch at this year’s Entrepreneurship Week. UC alumnus Ilya Sutskever (BSc 2005 UC) who co-founded OpenAI and Safe Superintelligence Inc. will be recognized with a U of T honorary degree this spring.
