The Founding College of the University of Toronto

Standing for Women on December 6

Announcements

Thirty-one years ago, 14 young women were murdered at Polytechnique Montréal in a senseless act of misogyny.

As an institution founded on principles of diversity and inclusion, University College is reaffirming our commitment to fight hate and discrimination on this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

In mourning and honouring the 14 lives that were needlessly taken, we also recognize that gender-based violence continues to plague our society—a problem that disproportionately affects marginalized individuals and has sadly gotten worse during the COVID-19 pandemic.

University College applauds the courage of so many women who have spoken about their experiences with misogyny and violence, helping shine light on an issue that often exists in the shadows and out of the public eye.

We are listening and pledge to continue denouncing misogyny while celebrating the strength and resilience of women and girls, as well as LGBTQ2 and gender-diverse individuals around the world.
