Scholarships & Awards

The competition is held biennially and is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in any Canadian University. Established in 1963 in memory of Norma Epstein (UC ’45), from surpluses accumulated in the fund, it supports prizes of up to a total of $2,000, each year in the categories of Poetry, Drama, Novel, Short Story, and Other Prose.

Established in 1946 in memory of Norma Epstein (UC ’45), the Norma Epstein Foundation Awards in Creative Writing is a competition held annually and is open to students enrolled in University College or to students from other Colleges who are enrolled in University College-sponsored or affiliated courses or programs. To provide funding for undergraduate students who identify as LGBTQ or who are pursuing studies with a focus on sexual diversity at the University of Toronto. The awards will be based on financial need and academic merit with a preference for Canadian residents. These awards will be made in consultation with the Sexual Diversity Studies Awards Committee. Awards will vary in number and value and will be open to students of other colleges and divisions of the University.

Gift of various donors in appreciation of Professor Paul Perron’s term as Principal of University College (1997 – 2005). To be awarded to UC students who are enrolled in a minimum course load of 3.0 with a GPA of at least 3.0. The award must be made in accordance with the UofT Policy on Student Awards and OSOTF II / OTSS program guidelines. Apply using the online grant application available on ACORN.

Gifted by the Pride and Remembrance Foundation. Preference to students in the Sexual Diversity Studies (SDS) program. Though preference will be given to students registered in the SDS program, awards may also be given to other lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students at the University of Toronto. The primary criterion will be financial need in accordance with the requirements of the Ontario Trust for Student Support program (OTSS). Other criteria may also be considered, such as academic achievement or outstanding volunteer contributions on or off campus aimed at increasing acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Bequest of Professor T.J. Meek (UC 1903), distinguished scholar and head of the Department of Near Eastern Studies of which he was a member from 1923 until 1952; professor emeritus until his death in 1966. Variable as to number and value. Gifted by Eleanor Thomson, the wife of Professor Thomson. Awarded to a student in Classics and/or History with financial need. Recipients must satisfy the eligibility requirements of the OTSS program. Apply using the online grant application available on ACORN.

The J. R. MacGillivray Fellowship is a gift of Elinor MacGillivray in honour of her husband, Professor J.R. MacGillivray, professor of English in University College, 1930-70. To be awarded to a student graduating from University College and pursuing graduate study in the humanities at the University of Toronto. 

Gift of Bob Rae (UC '69) and Arlene Perly Rae (UC '71) in honour of Mr. Rae's parents. To be awarded to University College students, financial need will be the primary criterion in selecting the recipients.
