Join us for the three-day Priestley Lecture series, featuring Dene scholar Glen Coulthard, Professor of Political Science and Indigenous Studies at the University of British Columbia. This engaging lecture series presents Coulthard's work on a new book, in which he highlights the historical and global context of the place-based framework developed in his award-winning earlier book Red Skin, White Masks. The lectures will focus on the political activities of a dedicated cadre of Native militants organizing (largely, but not exclusively) in the Northwest Territories and British Columbia from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. Professor Coulthard will explore the profound inspiration Red Power advocates of this period drew from the decolonization struggles of the "Third World" and how they, like many radicalized communities of colour during this time, molded and adapted the insights they gleaned from these struggles abroad into their own unique critiques of racial capitalism, patriarchy, and internal colonialism at home.

The F.E.L. Priestley Lectures in the History of Ideas have been funded by a number of Professor Priestley's former students. The F.E.L. Priestley Lectures reflects Professor Priestley's broad interest in the history of ideas and his dedication to teaching and scholarship.
