Financial Need Awards

Alan Coatsworth Memorial Scholarship

The Alan Coatsworth Memorial Scholarship was created by Klaus Goldschlag (UC 1944) in honour of Alan Coatsworth, whose ecumenical benevolence assisted young Jewish Torontonians before and during the Second World War. It is awarded annually to students in University College who have achieved high standing in one or more of the following areas of study: history, philosophy and languages. The primary criterion for the award is financial need. Awards have a value of $500 and are variable in number. Apply using the online grant application available on ACORN.

Leadership Awards

Allan Marshall Memorial Bursary

In memory of  Flt/Lt. S.A. Marshall (UC 1948) who gave his life in the service of Canada on May 19, 1956. The bursary of the value of the annual income is awarded to a student entering their graduating year, requiring financial assistance, who has in previous years obtained high academic standing and has been active in student affairs. Approximate value is $400.

Bessie Griffith Cosens Scholarship

The Bessie Griffith Cosens Scholarship is a bequest of the late Mrs. Bessie Griffith Cosens (UC 1924), with a value of the annual income of the fund (approximately $820). It is awarded to a female student obtaining a grade A standing who is most deserving of financial assistance.

Canadian Studies

Canadian Studies Essay Prize

The Canadian Studies Essay Prize is generously supported by Peter Warrian. Essays are submitted by students enrolled in a full-year or half-year Canadian Studies course at University College. Financial need is the primary criterion.

Carman Guild Scholarship

Established in memory of Carman B. Guild (UC 1947), an active member of the University College Literary and Athletic Society, the Students’ Administrative Council, the College of Electors, the University of Toronto Alumni Association, the University College Alumni Association and many Hart House clubs and committees. To be awarded in-course to University College students who demonstrate outstanding leadership, energy and enthusiasm in extracurricular activities at the college and/or the university. Awards will vary in number and value. Approximately $1,000 is available.

Christine Elmslie Scholarship

The Christine Elmslie Scholarship is intended to support students graduating from University College who are preparing for a career in the international field whose linguistic competence will allow them to pursue such a career. Eligible students will be completing an undergraduate program in history or the social sciences (e.g., political science, economics, international relations, geography, etc.) and will be proceeding to graduate study either inside or outside Canada. Approximate value of the scholarship is $1,900.

Travel Awards

Cloister Educational Foundation of Toronto Awards

This award has been established by the estate of Marjorie Moore (UC 1947) to provide grants for University College students to assist with travel and living abroad for periods of up to one year. Students from the fields of art, archaeology, classics, history and modern languages will be eligible. Such students may be at any level of study. Special consideration will be given to students for whom a period abroad is important and an integral part of their education. Awards will vary in number and value; approximately $17,000 will be available annually.

David and Helen Eisen Fellowship

The David and Helen Eisen Fellowship is the bequest of David Eisen and the gift of Mrs. Helen Eisen. This award is intended for graduate study at any university in the areas of philosophy, history, literature (any language) or environmental studies, with preference to the field of environmental studies. Approximate value is $4,000.
