Financial Need Awards

Allan Coatsworth Memorial Scholarship

The Allan Coatsworth Memorial Scholarship was created by Klaus Goldschlag (UC 1944) in honour of Allan Coatsworth, whose ecumenical benevolence assisted young Jewish Torontonians before and during the Second World War. It is awarded annually to students in University College who have achieved high standing in one or more of the following areas of study: history, philosophy and languages. The primary criterion for the award is financial need. Awards have a value of $500 and are variable in number. Apply using the online grant application available on ACORN.

Allan Marshall Memorial Bursary

In memory of  Flt/Lt. S.A. Marshall (UC 1948) who gave his life in the service of Canada on May 19, 1956. The bursary of the value of the annual income is awarded to a student entering their graduating year, requiring financial assistance, who has in previous years obtained high academic standing and has been active in student affairs. Approximate value is $400.

Awarded to a University College student for the purpose of graduate studies within or outside Canada.

Travel Awards
Cognitive Science

Arriba Travel Award for Cognitive Science

To be awarded to one or two domestic undergraduate students enrolled in a Cognitive Science major to travel outside Canada to gain further experience in Cognitive Science. Eligible students must demonstrate both financial need and the academic merit of their travel's purpose. Preference will be given to University College students.

Art Museum at the University of Toronto Awards

These awards are intended to assist students who have been involved with the Art Museum at the University of Toronto. Students must demonstrate financial need in order to be eligible. Graduate and undergraduate students are eligible with preference to students who have some affiliation with University College. The University College Registrar will consult with the Director of the Art Museum before selection recipients.

Beatrice Bott Dow Bursary in English Literature

Established by Marguerite Ruth Dow (UC'49) in memory of her mother Beatrice Bott Dow (1890-1974). To be awarded to a University College student enrolled in English Literature who has demonstrated financial need. Academic standing will also be considered.

Bessie Griffith Cosens Scholarship

Provided under the will of the late Mrs. Bessie Griffith Cosens, a graduate of University College in the year 1924, and supplemented by her husband, Mr. Gordon Cosens.  To be awarded to a woman student of University College in any course, and in any year, who is most deserving of financial assistance.

Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies

Bonte Minnema Awards Honouring Sexual Diversity Advocacy

These awards are open to all undergraduate students who are enrolled in a specialist or major program in Sexual Diversity Studies and who can demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated leadership in or commitment to LGBTQ advocacy. Applications for these awards must be submitted to the Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies. The Director of the Centre will then recommend possible recipients for the awards to the University College Registrar.

Canadian Studies

Canadian Studies Interdisciplinary Prize

The Canadian Studies Interdisciplinary Prize, generously supported by Peter Warrian, is awarded to an undergraduate student who writes the best essay on any interdisciplinary aspect of Canadian life, thought, or society and is in financial need. The student must be in the Canadian Studies program or enrolled in a University college course that is sponsored by the Canadian Studies department.

Leadership Awards

Carman Guild Scholarship

Established in memory of Carman B. Guild (UC 1947), an active member of the University College Literary and Athletic Society, the Students’ Administrative Council, the College of Electors, the University of Toronto Alumni Association, the University College Alumni Association and many Hart House clubs and committees. To be awarded in-course to University College students who demonstrate outstanding leadership, energy and enthusiasm in extracurricular activities at the college and/or the university. Awards will vary in number and value.
