Scholarships & Awards

Gift of the late Sir John Gibson (UC 1863). The value is approximately $400 plus the tuition allowance for a total possible value of approximately $2,400 over four years; awarded for general proficiency. The scholarships include tuition allowance of $500 per year which is renewable with an annual grade point average of at least 3.50 on a course load of 4 full credit equivalents (FCEs) from September to September.

The Special Woodhouse Prize is the bequest of the late A.S.P. Woodhouse, for many years head of the Department of English. The prize is of the value of up to $5,000 to assist University College graduates to pursue studies in English at graduate schools within or outside Canada.

Endowed by the late Professor Squair; prize equals the value of the annual income from the fund to be used for books. 

Gift of the late J.S. McLean. The awards have a value of $1000 each; the number is determined by the balance of the income from the fund; awarded for general proficiency.

Established through the generosity of the friends and family of Susan Iannucci (UC '70) to recognize outstanding University College students in the Humanities who demonstrate financial need. Preference to a student in the Specialist program in English. One award for each of Second, Third and Fourth Year. Financial need will be the primary criterion in selecting recipients. Apply using the online grant application available on ACORN.

Gift of James Mossman (UC 1981) in honour of his father Ted Mossman. These awards have a value of approximately $1,000 and are given to students showing exceptional promise. 

Established in 1936 by family and friends in memory of Alma Anderson Bastedo (UC 1909) and now including her children, Dorothy Bastedo Cavers (UC 1934), Edgar (Ted) Frank Bastedo (UC 1938), Jean Anne Bastedo and Dr. Donald (Don) Lou Bastedo (UT 1946). To be awarded to a University College student with excellent performance in an English program, with preference to a student whose course of study also includes one or more European languages.

Established by Hari Shanmugadhasan (UC’78) and matched by IBM Canada. The awards are to recognize the best University College students enrolled in the Mathematics Specialist Program. The awards are variable in number and value. The primary criterion on which awards will be based is financial need. Apply using the online grant application available on ACORN.

To be awarded for proficiency in Modern Languages.

Gift of Dr. Herbert J. Davis, professor of English in University College and later Prefessor of Textual Criticism at Oxford University, in honour of his wife Mrs. Gertrud Davis.  To promote the exchange of students between University College and German universities.  The scholarship will be awarded to University College students doing university studies in Germany.  Both students in upper years and recent graduates are eligible.
