Markus Stock Announcement

We are delighted to announce that the Agenda Committee of Academic Board has approved the appointment of Professor Markus Stock as the 17th Principal of University College from January 1, 2020 – June 30, 2024.

Since joining the University of Toronto in 2005, Professor Stock has amassed a notable record of service in academic leadership and governance. He is currently Chair of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures with a cross-appointment to the Centre for Medieval Studies. Professor Stock is a valued member of various departmental, Faculty, and University Committees, including: Academic Board (2011–present); Academic Policies and Programs Committee (2013–present); the President’s International Council for Europe (2018–present); and the Advisory Committee for the U of T Libraries (2013–2016), amongst many others. In terms of service to the sector, he has been a member of the SSHRC Connection Grants Committee and an Academic Colleague on the Ontario Council of Universities (COU).

Professor Stock holds a Ph.D. in Medieval German Literature from the University of Göttingen (2000). His research and teaching interests are in German language, literature, and culture of the Middle Ages. He held visiting professorships at the University of Freiburg (2008) and Harvard University (2009) as well as two Research Fellowships at the University of Freiburg (2012 and 2017); he also was an Erasmus Mundus Scholar at the Universities of Porto and Palermo (2013–14). He is Co-Editor of Seminar: A Journal of Germanic Studies and Vice-President of the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German.

Professor Stock is well positioned to lead University College through the completion of the major revitalization project, the animation of the new student spaces, and ultimately the development of the future vision for the College. Professor Stock also demonstrates a keen understanding of the role of the College in student experience and the increasing complexity and diversity of students’ needs. We are thrilled that Professor Stock has agreed to serve in this important leadership role at the University. Please join us in congratulating him on this appointment.

We will be consulting on the appointment of an Interim Principal from July 1 – December 31, 2019, and will communicate further about that appointment over the coming months. We are grateful for Professor Donald Ainslie’s exceptional leadership of University College over the past 8 years, and will be honouring him over the coming months.
