Scholarships & Awards

To be awarded on the basis of financial need to full-time, undergraduate students enrolled in the Humanities in University College with preference to those studying Philosophy. Eligible candidates are identified through the University's UTAPS program.

Established by a gift of the University College Committee in appreciation of Professor Forguson’s term as principal of University College (1989-97), these awards are intended to assist University College students to benefit from the advantages of living in the college’s residences. Financial need is the primary criterion in selecting recipients, but academic merit and community involvement are also considered. Bequest of the late Isabelle Paris MacLachlan (UC 1911), of variable number and value within the limits of the annual income from the fund, available to female students. In awarding these scholarships, financial circumstances will be considered as well as academic standing. Bequest of the late Professor Margaret Jane Sinden (UC 1937), who taught German at University College from 1946 to 1979; scholarship is of the value of the annual income from the fund.  Preference will be given to a student taking German who is enrolled in the specialist program in Modern Languages and Literatures, or who is taking a program of courses equivalent to or leading toward that specialty. 

Established by a bequest of Margaret Jean Leppington (UC 1950), this award assists University College students to travel abroad in order to study in the modern languages other than English. The value and number of scholarships are variable according to need and academic merit.

To be awarded to University College students on the basis of academic merit, with a preference for Black and Indigenous students.

Awarded to University College students who demonstrate financial need and are in good academic standing. Preference will be given for Black and Indigenous students at UC.

Gift of friends and colleagues of Mary Jane Hendrie (UC 1981) who died in the Korean Airline incident of 1983. This award is intended for a student with financial need who has contributed to college life by participating in athletics or other extracurricular activities.

Bequest of the late Mary Ann McWhorter, (UC 1908) in recognition of student academic achievement for any year or program. 

Gift of the late Mrs. William Charlton in memory of her daughter, Mrs. J.J. Gibson. Preference will be given to students enrolled in a music program, but if there is no eligible candidate the award may be made in any field of study.
