Scholarships & Awards

Established by a gift of the University College Committee in appreciation of Professor Forguson’s term as principal of University College (1989-97), these awards are intended to assist University College students to benefit from the advantages of living in the college’s residences. Financial need is the primary criterion in selecting recipients, but academic merit and community involvement are also considered. Bequest of the late Isabelle Paris MacLachlan (UC 1911), of variable number and value within the limits of the annual income from the fund, available to female students. In awarding these scholarships, financial circumstances will be considered as well as academic standing. For University College students in Majors or Specialists in the humanities including English, Philosophy, History and Classics. May also be awarded on the basis of other criteria such as academic achievement and community involvement. Bequest of the late Miss Catherine S. Michell and Colonel William C. Michell, formerly principal of Riverdale Collegiate Institute. Awards are based on financial need. Academic merit may also be considered. Awards are variable in number and value depending on students’ financial need. Any balance of income may be used for in-course awards of variable value. Donated by Norman Altstedter (UC'40). To be awarded to University College students who have demonstrated an interest in studying journalism. Recipients mus satisfy the eligibility requirements of OTSS program. Apply using the online grant application available on ACORN. 

Gifted by the Pride and Remembrance Foundation. Preference to students in the Sexual Diversity Studies (SDS) program. Though preference will be given to students registered in the SDS program, awards may also be given to other lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students at the University of Toronto. The primary criterion will be financial need in accordance with the requirements of the Ontario Trust for Student Support program (OTSS). Other criteria may also be considered, such as academic achievement or outstanding volunteer contributions on or off campus aimed at increasing acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Bequest of Professor T.J. Meek (UC 1903), distinguished scholar and head of the Department of Near Eastern Studies of which he was a member from 1923 until 1952; professor emeritus until his death in 1966. Variable as to number and value. Gifted by Eleanor Thomson, the wife of Professor Thomson. Awarded to a student in Classics and/or History with financial need. Recipients must satisfy the eligibility requirements of the OTSS program. Apply using the online grant application available on ACORN.

Gift of Bob Rae (UC '69) and Arlene Perly Rae (UC '71) in honour of Mr. Rae's parents. To be awarded to University College students, financial need will be the primary criterion in selecting the recipients.
