Scholarships & Awards

To recognize and encourage outstanding academic performance in science, social sciences and humanities at University College.  Awarded to students finishing their first, second, third, or fourth year of study. Awards vary in value and number.

To be awarded annually for deserving achievement by a University College student in a Commerce Program. Financial need may also be taken into account. 

Founded in 1889 by the Rev. Samuel Lyle of the city of Hamilton, accompanied by a financial award.

Bequest of the late Professor Margaret Jane Sinden (UC 1937), who taught German at University College from 1946 to 1979; scholarship is of the value of the annual income from the fund.  Preference will be given to a student taking German who is enrolled in the specialist program in Modern Languages and Literatures, or who is taking a program of courses equivalent to or leading toward that specialty. 

Bequest of Mary C. Crichton (UC’47), BA in Modern Languages and MA’50 from the Faculty of Arts and Science in German Language & Literature. To be awarded to students demonstrating academic merit and studying French, German, or English literature. 

Bequest of the late Mary Ann McWhorter, (UC 1908) in recognition of student academic achievement for any year or program. 

Gift of the late Mrs. William Charlton in memory of her daughter, Mrs. J.J. Gibson. Preference will be given to students enrolled in a music program, but if there is no eligible candidate the award may be made in any field of study.

Bequest of the late Mrs. Florence Louisa Cody; preference will be given to students who have taken English and History. 

Gift of Evelyn Henderson McAndrew. The scholarships will be awarded to top students in the fields of drama, music and the visual arts, including film and video studies. In addition, awards will be awarded at admission to students who declare an interest in these areas.

Awards will be variable in number and value. These awards are intended to recognize academic merit and/or financial need.
