Scholarships & Awards

Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Isadore Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Irving Paul Sussman and the late Mr. Samuel Smith, of the value of the annual income of the fund, to be awarded to a student, preferably in the fourth year, who is studying English and is in need of financial assistance. A bequest of the late Shirley L. Muir (UC 1923), the value of this scholarship is the annual income from the fund. It is for a student with high standing and financial need. Apply using the online grant application available on ACORN.

Endowed by the late Professor Squair; prize equals the value of the annual income from the fund to be used for books. 

Established in 1936 by family and friends in memory of Alma Anderson Bastedo (UC 1909) and now including her children, Dorothy Bastedo Cavers (UC 1934), Edgar (Ted) Frank Bastedo (UC 1938), Jean Anne Bastedo and Dr. Donald (Don) Lou Bastedo (UT 1946). To be awarded to a University College student with excellent performance in an English program, with preference to a student whose course of study also includes one or more European languages.

Gift of Dr. Herbert J. Davis, professor of English in University College and later Prefessor of Textual Criticism at Oxford University, in honour of his wife Mrs. Gertrud Davis.  To promote the exchange of students between University College and German universities.  The scholarship will be awarded to University College students doing university studies in Germany.  Both students in upper years and recent graduates are eligible.

To be awarded on the basis of financial need and will be awarded and administered in accordance with the University’s Policy on Student Awards and the UTAPS program, with preference given to Black students at the Faculty of Arts & Science enrolled at University College.

The gift of Mrs. J. Home Cameron in memory of her late husband, Professor Cameron. To be awarded for excellence in French. 

Preference will be given to a student intending to specialize in Classics.

Awards will be made on the basis of financial need demonstrated through the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) or on the basis of information provided by an individual on the award application. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) students from all U of T campuses, faculties, colleges and programs will be eligible, with no preference given to those enrolled in the Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies programs or courses. The awards will be administered by the Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies at University College in accordance with the University’s Policy on Student Awards and decisions about allocation will be made by its Student Awards Committee.  Although the primary consideration will be financial need, the Committee will also consider other factors such as outstanding volunteer contributions on or off campus aimed at increasing acceptance of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered people, as well as academic achievement. Awards are variable in number and value.
