Scholarships & Awards

Bequest of the late Professor Margaret Jane Sinden (UC 1937), who taught German at University College from 1946 to 1979; scholarship is of the value of the annual income from the fund.  Preference will be given to a student taking German who is enrolled in the specialist program in Modern Languages and Literatures, or who is taking a program of courses equivalent to or leading toward that specialty. 

Established by a bequest of Margaret Jean Leppington (UC 1950), this award assists University College students to travel abroad in order to study in the modern languages other than English. The value and number of scholarships are variable according to need and academic merit.

Awarded to University College students who demonstrate financial need and are in good academic standing. Preference will be given for Black and Indigenous students at UC.

Gift of friends and colleagues of Mary Jane Hendrie (UC 1981) who died in the Korean Airline incident of 1983. This award is intended for a student with financial need who has contributed to college life by participating in athletics or other extracurricular activities.

Bequest of the late Mary Ann McWhorter, (UC 1908) in recognition of student academic achievement for any year or program. 

Gift of the late Mrs. William Charlton in memory of her daughter, Mrs. J.J. Gibson. Preference will be given to students enrolled in a music program, but if there is no eligible candidate the award may be made in any field of study.

Gift of Evelyn Henderson McAndrew. The scholarships will be awarded to top students in the fields of drama, music and the visual arts, including film and video studies. In addition, awards will be awarded at admission to students who declare an interest in these areas.

Bequest of the late Miss Catherine S. Michell and Colonel William C. Michell, formerly principal of Riverdale Collegiate Institute. Awards are based on financial need. Academic merit may also be considered. Awards are variable in number and value depending on students’ financial need. Any balance of income may be used for in-course awards of variable value. Established in memory of her husband Moses Tartick by Anne Tartick. An annual award to a University College student for excellent performance in the humanities.

Founded by subscription in honour of the late Chief Justice Thomas Moss; awarded to a student in Classics.
