Scholarships & Awards

The competition is held biennially and is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in any Canadian University. Established in 1963 in memory of Norma Epstein (UC ’45), from surpluses accumulated in the fund, it supports prizes of up to a total of $2,000, each year in the categories of Poetry, Drama, Novel, Short Story, and Other Prose.

Established in 1946 in memory of Norma Epstein (UC ’45), the Norma Epstein Foundation Awards in Creative Writing is a competition held annually and is open to students enrolled in University College or to students from other Colleges who are enrolled in University College-sponsored or affiliated courses or programs. Donated by Norman Altstedter (UC'40). To be awarded to University College students who have demonstrated an interest in studying journalism. Recipients mus satisfy the eligibility requirements of OTSS program. Apply using the online grant application available on ACORN. 

Awarded to a UC student pursuing an Honours Bachelor of Arts, based on academic merit, with a preference for a student in an English program.

To provide funding for undergraduate students who identify as LGBTQ or who are pursuing studies with a focus on sexual diversity at the University of Toronto. The awards will be based on financial need and academic merit with a preference for Canadian residents. These awards will be made in consultation with the Sexual Diversity Studies Awards Committee. Awards will vary in number and value and will be open to students of other colleges and divisions of the University.

For students enrolled in the Sexual Diversity Studies program. Awarded to a student with financial need. Scholarships and awards will be given to students without regard to students’ college membership.  Recipients must satisfy the eligibility requirements of the OSOTF II / OTSS program. 

Gift of John Leyerle and others in honour of Principal Paul Perron and his wife Jacqueline Perron. to be awarded to students who otherwise may not have the opportunity to live in residence. Both financial need and merit will be considered. Normally two will be awarded. 

Gift of various donors in appreciation of Professor Paul Perron’s term as Principal of University College (1997 – 2005). To be awarded to UC students who are enrolled in a minimum course load of 3.0 with a GPA of at least 3.0. The award must be made in accordance with the UofT Policy on Student Awards and OSOTF II / OTSS program guidelines. Apply using the online grant application available on ACORN.

Donated by Margaret J. Gale, these awards will be given on the basis of exceptional academic merit to students enrolled at University College who are residing in the Whitney Hall Residence

Gift of his students, colleagues and friends in honour of Peter V. Marinelli (1933-93), professor of English in University College (1963-93). To be awarded for excellent performance by a University College student enrolled in the specialist program in English.
